From June 26th to 28th, the HydroVision International conference will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Charlotte Convention Center, and REIVAX North America will be present at Booth # 1335. This year, we will be presenting a case study on the USACE Bull Shoals Front End Controls Upgrade. The presentation will be from 8:30AM – 10:00 AM on June 27th in Room 208-B.
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) was facing issues related to their aging Siemens EX1 static excitation systems at their Bull Shoals station. This 400 MW generating station in Arkansas had eight (8) generators and a need for a costly overhaul of their excitation system. Concerns over spare parts availability and lack of technical support was putting the overall plant reliability at risk.
Reivax North America provided an innovative turnkey solution to reduce the cost of the upgrade by two-thirds (2/3) with a Front End Controls Upgrade. Choosing not to remove and install an entirely new and expensive excitation system, Reivax opted for a modern software-based solution to save USACE a significant amount of downtime and funds. The Reivax RTX Power product interfaces seamlessly with the Siemens bridges (or any other OEMs excitation system), power components, and plant controls while extending the life of the plant without significant invasive installation work. The resulting system has a new lifespan of greater than 20 years, improved diagnostics, SCADA remote communication, SOE/Datalogger and tools facilitating NERC model validation testing.
This presentation provides a technical review of static excitation systems, the challenges for the power plant related to ageing Siemens EX1 excitation systems, the pros and cons of a new excitation system versus a controls upgrade, a complete technical description, the technical and commercial benefits, the challenges faced during installation and the effective solutions, and a final performance evaluation of this solution from US Army Corps Of Engineers (USACE).
