REIVAX performs life extension upgrade on UNITROL F Static Excitation systems<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Learn how Reivax REIVAX performed four (4) front-end control upgrades on aging ABB UNITROL F excitation systems at the Fort Gibson hydro plant in Oklahoma. The scope included design, manufacturing, removal\/installation and commissioning.<\/p>\n

A common problem with digital excitation systems is that microprocessors become difficult to source as they get older. \u00a0This typically occurs around 15-20 years of equipment life. \u00a0While the equipment may be operating fine, the risk of finding spare parts in case of a failure increases, as does availability of technical support from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). \u00a0Older technology may also not be well protected against cyber security threats, as older operating systems lack supported security patches for new threats.<\/p>\n

A front-end control replacement is a good option to reduce the risk by updating the microprocessor technology and operating system to current standards. This type of upgrade is less expensive compared to a full system replacement.<\/p>\n

A common misconception is that only the OEM is able to undertake this type of upgrade. \u00a0However, in this case, the customer, US Army Corps Of Engineers (USACE), issued an open Request For Proposal (RFP) to replace the ABB UNITROL F excitation control equipment and invited multiple vendors including the OEM.<\/p>\n

After a thorough evaluation of the submitted tenders, considering technical, quality and experience etc, it was determined that Reivax North America was ranked the highest and subsequently an award<\/a> was issued accordingly.<\/p>\n
