The ECCO is a device designed to automatically and continuously optimize the blade-pitch and gate-opening combination curve of Kaplan or Bulb turbines during normal operation. Its objective is to maximize the hydraulic efficiency of the generating unit and reduce mechanical wear on the turbine across the entire operating points.
ECCO interfaces with the speed governor to identify and optimize the blade–gate combination curve. This interface allows for the introduction of minor adjustments to both guide vane and runner blade positions while efficiency is evaluated—until the optimal coordination relationship is achieved. The optimal combination curves are computed by ECCO and may be automatically updated in the governor, provided that a communication interface is available.
