Efficiency & Cam Curve Optimizer | ECCO

ECCO – Efficiency & Cam Curve Optimizer

The ECCO is a device designed to automatically and continuously optimize the blade-pitch and gate-opening combination curve of Kaplan or Bulb turbines during normal operation. Its objective is to maximize the hydraulic efficiency of the generating unit and reduce mechanical wear on the turbine across the entire operating points.

FEARTURES

  • LOCAL SEARCH – Real-time optimization during normal turbine operation
  • AUTOMATED INDEX TEST – Safe sweep across the full operational range
  • SAFETY – Configurable optimization operating region
  • VIBRATION MONITORING – Continuous health diagnostics of the turbine
  • SCADA INTERFACE – Seamless integration with supervisory control systems
  • CONJUGATION CURVE ALGORITHM – Intelligent generation of blade–wicket gate combination curve

OPERATING PRINCIPLE

ECCO interfaces with the speed governor to identify and optimize the blade–gate combination curve. This interface allows for the introduction of minor adjustments to both guide vane and runner blade positions while efficiency is evaluated—until the optimal coordination relationship is achieved. The optimal combination curves are computed by ECCO and may be automatically updated in the governor, provided that a communication interface is available.

KEY BENEFITS

  • Continuous optimization of the turbine’s conjugation curve, maximizing efficiency by generating the highest possible power output with the lowest water consumption.
  • Operation across the full hydrological cycle, delivering the optimal blade–gate coordination curve for all upstream and downstream head levels.
  • Automatic index testing functionality, eliminating the need for external testing services.
  • Reduced mechanical wear caused by misalignment, such as vibration and cavitation.
  • Integrated vibration monitoring system, using 4 proximity probes and 2 accelerometers for machine condition tracking.
